Streaming Media Server memiliki peranan yang penting dalam penyebarluasan informasi yang berbentuk multimedia. Persiapan dalam membangun akan sangat mempengaruhi kinerjanya. Microsoft telah menyediakan fasilitas penunjang untuk menyebarkan multimedia dalam satu paket pada sistem operasi Windows Server 2003. Dengan demikian proses persiapan server akan lebih mudah karena tidak perlu mencari software lainnya.
