Abstract
Background: Data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Atlas in 2021 states that Indonesia ranks 5th with the largest number of people with diabetes in the world. This figure has almost doubled in just two years, compared to 10.7 million in 2019. The number of diabetes attacks in Indonesia reached 18 million in 2020. The prevalence of these cases increased by 6.2 percent compared to 2019. Diabetes Mellitus is one of the deadly diseases that is quite popular in Indonesia. Based on patient claim data from the Social Security Administration for Health (BPJS), Diabetes Mellitus is ranked 3rd as the most common disease experienced by Indonesians. Objective: To increase community knowledge related to Diabetes Mellitus in the hope of preventing an increase in Diabetes mellitus cases in Balong Hamlet, Pendowo Village, Kranggan District, Temanggung Regency. Method: Descriptive observation conducted in January-February 2024. The population in Balong Hamlet was 123 family cards with a sample calculation using the Slovin formula resulting in 111 family cards. The sampling method used purposive sampling. The method of counseling about hypetension uses lectures and power point media and brochures. Result: Interviews with health cadres in Balong Hamlet mentioned the case of 8 residents of Balong Hamlet having Diabetes Mellitus in the past 1 year due to behavioral and environmental factors related to the lack of knowledge and public awareness for early examination of Diabetes Mellitus. Knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus in the community of Balong Hamlet when given the Pre-Test as many as 18 people (58.1%) were less knowledgeable, while after being given the Post-Test value knowledge that was less knowledgeable there was only 1 person (3.2%) and most of them had good knowledge, namely 19 people (61.3%). Conclusion: Counseling activities, medical check-ups, gymnastics, and education on herbal medicine as an alternative to diabetes prevention have succeeded in increasing the knowledge and awareness of the community about Diabetes mellitus.
